The Concert Attire

I was getting dressed to see an LCD Soundsystem show this weekend when I became aware of the fact that we all dress a bit differently for concerts than we do for anything else. I began thinking about a concert outfit and what exactly that means. What are the tenets of a good performance outfit and why?

To start, it’s not a going-out outfit, there is some practicality to a concert outfit, but it isn’t necessarily comfortable. In a way, we’re performing too. Do you show off your devotion to the artists by wearing old mech or do you go the route of dressing for the crowd and look of the music? Maybe you aren’t a hippie in your day-to-day but when in Rome or front row at Stevie Nicks the urge finds you.

I think concert outfits should conform to some sort of uniformity. While it’s fantastic to be an individual, I believe that our taste in music, much like our style, is a reflection of ourselves. If it’s really someone you love then dressing to fit the mood shouldn’t be too much of a stretch but more of a fun exploration of a facet of yourself. I think a good concert outfit should be unfussy, comfortable to stand in, slouchy in a chic way, and warm or breezy depending upon the season. It should be layered, a look you’d be comfortable in during fall or spring when the temperature shifts from hour to hour. Wear a sneaker or a boot you’d walk in, nothing that’d make the event miserable. And most importantly accessories: glasses, hats, necklaces, rings, bracelets. This is where you have fun with the concert fit, wear something funky that pops with the rest of the ensemble. And most importantly bring earplugs, anyone who says otherwise is simply out of fashion!
