INTERVIEW: Juna Uehara

Makeup has definitely made my identity bolder.”- Juna Uehara

  1. When did you start getting into makeup and what is the story of why you did?

In 2019, I embarked on a journey to discover my true passion in life. Exploring various roles like stylist assistant, I stumbled upon an unexpected opportunity to assist a makeup artist during a brand shoot. It was at that moment, as I watched the artist meticulously doing makeup on a model, that I experienced a profound realization – "This is it!" Witnessing the transformation of makeup into a form of art, I found not only my calling but a source of boundless inspiration that has fueled my creative journey ever since.

  2. Where do you pull your inspiration from when creating looks for not just clients in glam but for campaigns such as Nikon?

I draw inspiration from the everyday moments of my life, finding beauty in the intricacies of nature, the advancements of technology, and the diverse cultures. Continuously evolving my style, I am inspired by the artists I collaborate with, always striving to elevate and refine our collective vision to achieve the pinnacle of creativity and excellence.

  3. Where do you see yourself in 5 years in the makeup industry? Do you have a cosmetic focus? (celebrity glam, weddings, event glam, editorial glam, or even special effects?)

I have a strong passion for editorial glam, reveling in the opportunity to create striking looks that push boundaries and captivate audiences. Looking ahead, my goal over the next five years is to establish a signature style that makes a bold statement in my style, while also expanding my work to include collaborations with celebrities

  4. What are your top 3 favorite products to use on people and why?

Pat Mcgrath PermaGel Ultra Glide Eye Pencil It's very easy to blend but also pigmented. Mac Lip liners. I love the wide variety of colors. My personal favorite is Chestnut. Fenty Skin Butta Drop Refill Whipped Oil Body Cream with Tropical Oils + Shea Butter The way it glows on models skin I love it and you can see it in pictures is the best.

  5. How was your experience with the campaign shoot with Nikon US and what was your inspiration behind the look(s) created?

The team I worked with at Nikon US was one I frequently collaborated with so working with the familiar team at Nikon US made the latest project effortless. The photographer used my previous work as inspiration, and since I already knew everyone's style, the collaboration flowed smoothly. It turned out to be some of my best work yet.

  6. What was the highlight moment in your career so far and how does it impact your goals as a makeup artist now?

A pivotal highlight in my career was the opportunity to collaborate with some of my favorite artists. Despite being a select few, each collaboration instilled in me a sense of confidence, strength, and a relentless drive to continually improve my skills with the ultimate goal of working with them more frequently.

  7. How does makeup inspire you? Do you feel that it is a form of self-expression? If so, what do you want to say/ how do you want your clients to feel after you are done?

It does inspire me. I love seeing how makeup reflects people's personalities. For my clients, I want to bring their vision to life, showing them the magic of makeup alongside styling and everything. And for models, I aim to help them feel their best and discover new sides of themselves through makeup.

  8. What is your biggest tip to those of us trying to get into makeup?

My top advice is to stay mindful of your team. communicate with them. Teamwork makes dream work and be confident in your abilities.

  9. If you had to choose a favorite part of the process of doing/ creating these makeup looks what would it be?

I love incorporating glitter, gems, and unconventional elements into my makeup looks. These additions may not be necessary for everyday makeup, but they contribute to creating the best possible look.

  10. What is your personal makeup routine and how have you seen it change as you grow your experience as a makeup artist? Did you become more experimental? Or simplify everything?

I don't spend much time on my makeup. 15 minutes max, including skincare routine, but it changed to focus on more detail and became more simple but still flawless.

  11. How do you embody your Okinawan heritage in your work please go in depth about your culture and its impact on your work.

Okinawa is truly unique, although it's part of Japan, it feels like a different country altogether. We boast our own distinct culture, and growing up here means being surrounded by breathtaking natural landscapes and rich traditional arts. Whenever I create a new makeup look, I draw inspiration from my heritage, exploring patterns and color palettes rooted in Okinawan culture. Whether it's the vibrant artwork of my hometown or the serene beauty of its landscapes, I find endless beauty and inspiration in Okinawa

  12. How and why do you feel your work stands out from other makeup artists in this industry?

I believe everyone has their unique style as an artist, and I feel that my work always reflects my style, which is what makes it stand out

  13. What is your view on identity in each look you create and how do you infuse it to transfer from an idea to a face?

I always incorporate the model's style, even when there's a specific mood or theme. I strive to create a makeup look that complements their style, ensuring it enhances rather than overshadows their personality

  14. How has makeup changed your view of your own identity? Has it made you bolder? Has it affected you?

I used to dislike myself, especially my round and boring face. I've always been surrounded by cute people, which made me feel embarrassed about not being cute enough. However, since learning how to do makeup, it has given me more confidence. Becoming a makeup artist has allowed me to change my look to reflect who I want to be. I am a very short Asian girl who might seem like every other Asian girl, but Makeup has made my identity bolder. I often stand out and am remembered because of my makeup looks. I love receiving compliments on my makeup.
