Our Favorite Sustainable Brands this 2024

Fast fashion is killing our world. Literally.

Here’s a fact: the fashion industry is responsible for a whopping 10% of global greenhouse gas emissions, according to Good On You, a company dedicated to ethical fashion knowledge.

We Americans, love fast fashion– and how could you not? Who could turn down access to infinite trendy designs for cheap prices, all available between your fingertips and a cell phone screen? Sure, this cute off-the-shoulder top fell apart at the seams after two wears, but I got it for three dollars on the Shein App!

But the underlying impact of shopping fast fashion is a horror story of thousands of underpaid workers (in some cases, children), a rapidly worsening global environment (bye-bye Mother Nature), and even animal cruelty.

Now what makes a brand sustainable? It’s a vague term, but it mostly means a company is sourcing materials in a way that is mindful of the environment and animals, and that workers are actually being paid fair wages with good working conditions. Don’t be fooled by companies “greenwashing”, or catfishing as ethical. You can check how sustainable the brands you shop from are through Good On You’s brand directory. By the way, Good On You gave Shein a “We Avoid” rating, which we knew was coming.

Being a 100% sustainable shopper or brand is nearly impossible, but should always be a goal. Thrifting or buying secondhand through apps like ThredUp and Depop are some ways to be mindful shoppers. Sewing your outfits would be the elite solution, but shopping directly from more ethical brands (if you can afford to do so), and rewearing the items, is an easier way to do your part.
