The Case for Cargo
I’ve always loved the functionality of cargo pockets. Whether they come on shorts, pants, jackets, etc. I don’t care, I just frankly love the storage. Cargo clothing has certainly seen fire and rain when it comes to being in or out of style, but I believe the cargo pant in particular is an evergreen fashion item. This statement is contingent upon a few key points however!
The pant needs to be done in a style that’s timeless (straight or relaxed fit), made in a fabric that can be worn year round (cotton perhaps?), and preferably be in a neutral tone (I’ll include camo, but aiming for a khaki or a nice green). I’m of the persuasion that, while chic sometimes, denim cargo pants are too trendy to be a closet mainstay.
I also think overly baggy cargo pants are also too trendy to work as your consistent cargo. I’ll say some of the best cargo pants can be found second hand! Another tip would be to consider going to a military supply, you’d be surprised what turns up! If you’re not the thrifty type, ERL is doing some very fun cargo pants reminiscent of Abercrombie.
If you’d prefer to just have the real deal, consider checking out The Society Archive: they’re constantly refreshing their options and the pieces always feel lived in. I’d say a good rule of thumb in purchasing a forever pair of cargoes is to ask yourself if you’d be able to dress them up as well as down. If you’d be just as comfortable wearing these to slink about a beach town as you would be donning them to enjoy a chic bite to eat downtown, then you’ve found the right pair.
Now, of course, rules are meant to be broken! These are my tips, my tricks, my ideas! You may find that something more maximal works better long term for you! Maybe baggy has and always will be your look! What I’m hoping to do here is spread the good word that is cargo pants, don’t be afraid to dip your toe into the water. You might find you have more to carry than you thought!
