The “WRONG” Shoe Theory

You’re staring at your cluttered closet, with more than enough outfit options for you to choose from, but still thinking to yourself “I have nothing to wear”.

Honestly, same here. We’re looking for new ways to elevate our style without becoming a frequent outfit repeater, but we’re also in desperate need of fresh inspiration. Instead of buying new pieces for your wardrobe, incorporating the “wrong shoe” theory is an easy way to upgrade your outfit from basic to original.

What is the “Wrong” Shoe theory?

It is when you style your outfits to shoes that are considered nontraditional, but actually comes together in an aesthetic fashion. Think of dad sneakers with maxi dresses, heels with sweatpants, combat boots with skirts. It sounds “wrong” at first glance, but the outfits just look right. Incorporating the wrong shoe theory opens up a whole world of new outfit options for whatever the occasion or season. Love that slip dress you wore almost everyday during the summer? You can pair that same dress with some combat boots along with a thick shrug, and have yourself a cute winter outfit! Want to wear jeans to the office but don’t want to make it too casual? Pair them with some statement heels, a solid t-shirt or blouse, and a blazer, you have a solid business casual outfit for the day. Or you can switch it up by pairing your best trousers with platform sandals or wedges.

Today you can find a number of celebrities like Emma Chamberlain and Zendaya using the wrong shoe theory in their everyday wardrobes. Chamberlain’s staple go-to shoes with her maxi dresses are her bright red Sam Smith Adidas paired with quarter length white socks; creating a sporty laidback feel to her very summery maxi outfit. Zendaya’s been seen wearing different chic trousers with either sneakers or platform sandals, sometimes with colorful patterned socks that further elevate her sleek and eye-catching style. These influential trendsetters inspire people to experiment with fashion aesthetics; further increasing the popularity of the “Wrong” Shoe theory to what it is today. Now it’s not uncommon to see even the most whimsical outfits paired with some chunky black loafers.

The “Wrong” Shoe theory is not only a fun way to elevate your style, but also inspires you to style other pieces in your wardrobe together that are “wrong”.
