Theodora Needs to Be Added to Your List!

I would say if you think Don Angie is a hard reservation… Theodora is right up there.

I have been waiting months and months to try this spot. Theodora recently opened in 2024 here in Brooklyn, and can I just say… IT LIVED UP TO THE HYPE. From the cocktails, the food, and the service, @theodorabrooklyn needs to be on your hit list this year! All their bread is made in-house and is fluffy, light, and delicious! The dinner highlights for me were the red snapper ceviche, the za’atar kubaneh bread, the swordfish skewer, and the octopus! Also, they have a bakery next door which has also recently opened named Thea Bakery, and if you find yourself in Brooklyn you have to try their pasteries as well!

Let me start off with the Mezcamica cocktail, if you love mezcal then this spot is definitely for you! Their bar ranges in spirits but has a focus on mezcal and you can even try a mezcal flight at their bar! This cocktail is their take on a mezcal milk punch, playing with hibiscus and lime which created this well-balanced cocktail pairing perfect with my evening. I would say this is actually one of my top sips in NYC! I would go back for this cocktail alone.

The ambiance of the space is beautiful with bar seating, tables, and my personal favorite, the chef’s counter, where you can see the amazing chefs cook, work, and create the dishes in front of you! Now let’s talk about the breads. MY GOD LADIES AND GENTLEMEN I am in love with their Za’atar kubaneh. It is soft, airy, and light and goes perfectly with the combination of dips provided with the order of bread. The harissa adds a nice kick to the herbs which is something that I really enjoyed and is seriously worth the 15 dollars.

Za’atar kubaneh $15

Now call me controversial but.. if you look up this spot everyone raves about this ricotta toast. Let me start off by saying IT ISN’T BAD! But… is it worth the $14? I do not think so… There are so many delicious dishes on the menu that I think skip the toast and order the other things instead.

Now onto the small plates! The red snapper ceviche was fresh, zesty, and delicious. I could not ask for a better starter to be quite frank. I would die in this sauce… It was actually one of the most memorable dishes of the night and the charred pineapple on top was a great addition as it added that smokey yet sweet flavor to the delicate fish.

Red Snapper Ceviche

If you haven’t tried swordfish, I simply think you should have your first time at Theodora. Delicious, packed with flavor, and so tender that you will immediately want to order 10 more! Paired with the charcoal grilled green onion, it is a balanced and a must-order dish from this spot. The one thing I would like to highlight at this spot is they really know how to do seafood well, in a way that feels inventive, creative, and NOT BORING!

Swordfish Skewer

The octopus played with sweet and savory flavors; I loved the butternut squash this really played up the dish for me. It’s not anything too crazy, but if you love octopus like I do I suggest ordering it as it was also delicious and prepared well.

This lamb dish is on the pricey side but when I tell you it is a MUST ORDER for the table… You have to order it! It is perfect to share with your dinner table, and the lamb is juicy, tender, and packed with flavor all on top of their homemade, fluffy pita, how can you resist? Use all the sauces… just trust me on that one.

The classic fan favorites for dessert here at Theodora are the chocolate cake and the camembert cheesecake which I can say live up to the hype. My personal favorite was the camembert cheesecake as it is baked in a basque cheesecake style and is rich, creamy, and not overly sweet which really makes you able to finish the whole dessert contently. The chocolate cake was good but if I had to choose one the cheesecake has stolen my heart for sure.
