RSVP: Party @ Saltburn!
Congratulations! You’ve been invited to party with the Cattons at Saltburn. Now what are you wearing?
Saltburn is the one thing the internet cannot stop talking about. From the gorgeous performances by leading men, Barry Keogan and Jacob Elordi, to the scenes that are making us question our morals...the movie directed by Emerald Fennell seems to be the only thing on everyone’s mind. Set in 2006, it’s safe to say the early 2000’s party aesthetic is blowing up all of our FYP’s and bringing back college nostalgia for the millennials. Sophie Canale’s costume design is everything we need and more, as she tailors each outfit to the inner workings and journey of each character, while highlighting the different elements of the time period. So, say we’re invited to murder the dance floor at the Saltburn Estate...
Here's what’s in the wardrobe: With the entire aesthetic of the film in mind, combining a slight English old money aesthetic with an eccentric and sparkly touch of Y2K could create the perfect party fit Venetia would approve of. Now remember, we’re in England. It won’t be as scorching as a summer spent in the Caribbean, so layering is on the table. Starting with bottoms, some form of comfortable and laid back, yet eye-catching pants is necessary. Think, Venetia’s sequined star-patterned trousers we first meet her in. (And even going in the direction of Juicy Couture track pants!) We could also go for a pleated skirt to hint towards the crowd at Oxford or a denim mini skirt with a chunky belt that sits right below the navel. Having a dramatic bottom, we don’t necessarily need to dull down the top half of the fit, but instead cohere the two together so the look feels enhanced, rather than unseemly. With a patterned bottom we could simply opt for a colored cropped tank, or a baby tee with a small graphic. Add silvery single strapped heels and make that foyer your runway! If you’re out flirting with Felix in the maze, throw on a fur lined jacket or a cropped lace “tie-front” cardigan to avoid the shivers you’ll get from the cool northern air AND the creepy minotaur statue.
The key to these outfits on-screen are texture. The looks that stick out in the movie are bold, colorful, and absolutely laced with texture. Sequins, intricate embroidery, fringe, studs, and more are all spread throughout the memorable designs of the film.
All in all, with this formula...there’s no doubt you’re inheriting the Saltburn Estate.
