TIGHTS: The Essential Accessory for Winter

Tights, as we know, have been around for centuries. The first pair of tights was created in the 1800s to replace petticoats, although they weren’t a statement in every woman's closet until later. They became known for their warmth, ease of use, and the ability to have their legs visible without having to wear longer skirts. As the love and everyday use of tights became more popular, the '60s and '70s created some of the best trends. The use of plain black, nude, and vibrant tights was popular in the '60s, with the use of pencil skirts and keeping women's legs warm in the winter. Our prime example is Twiggy, the English model and actress. A lot of her wintery looks include vibrant tights, shorts, and a fur coat.

As trends continued and the 70s had gained a love for miniskirts, tights were produced at a faster rate. From psychedelic patterns and flower power designs, every tight was bright colored and fun. They were very popular for wintertime, as women needed something to keep their legs warm when paired with their mini dresses and skirts!

The years leading up to now have proved that tights have always been in fashion for every season. This accessory has made its way into my wardrobe faster than ever in recent years. I’ve worn skirts with tights while waiting in line for concerts that take place in the middle of snowstorms. If there is one thing tights can do, it’s to keep us warm! Every style imaginable has been created for us to choose from such as lacy, floral, cheetah print, thermal, you name it. But where do you buy good ones and how would you wear them? Sustainability is a big factor, especially if we want tights that will last a while and won’t make their way into landfills quickly. Sticking with brands like Target, Urban Outfitters, Anthropologie, Calzedonia, or even Wolford will help us in the long run. I’ve personally owned a pair of Target and Urban Outfitters tights and I still own them a year and a half later!

With that said, here are a few links to some tights, ranging from cheap to more expensive that could make their way into your closet!
