Why The Color You Wear is Important

Although we can wear anything we want, we tend to go for colors that we feel suit us best. I catch myself going for more blues, greens, blacks, and other darker colors as I feel it suits my complexion better. Why do we do this? Well, that’s because we have skin undertones that can be cooler, warmer, or neutral and when paired correctly can cause us to highlight our features well. When we choose certain colors that go against certain undertones, it can wash us out.

Finding the best color palette that compliments our features wires down to what kind of undertone we have. Warm, cool, or neutral are the three different undertones one can possess. The best way to find your undertone is to check the inside of the wrist or the stomach. If there are blue veins, then you are cool-toned and if there are green or olive veins then you’re warm-toned. If you believe you see both, then you are likely a neutral undertone. Another great method to test what kind of undertones you have is using the white paper test. Take a white piece of paper and put it next to your face, if your skin looks rosy or pink in comparison to it then you have cool undertones. If you feel your skin looks more yellow, then warm undertones it is! With neutral undertones, this is best determined if you can wear a cream-colored shirt and it doesn’t wash you out.

Now that we’ve figured out what kind of undertone you have, what colors are known to suit your complexion best? Warmer undertones are better complimented with warmer colors: browns, ivories, golds, or reds. Neutral colors like cream or beige tend to pair nicely too. If you’re looking for jewelry advice as well, gold is your best friend. For cooler undertones, various shades of blue, pink, purple, and some warmer shades like yellow complement beautifully. Silver, rose gold, and white gold jewelry work wonders to compliment those cool undertones.

Despite popular belief, I am somebody who has cool undertones and I love the way gold looks on me. As I always like to say, to each their own! Those who have neutral undertones tend to suit any and almost all kinds of colors but is most recommended to go for more muted hues: antique rose, summery yellow, jade green, or icy blue. If neutral colors are your thing, well you’re in luck! Off-whites, medium grays, beige, or navy work well too. For jewelry, the colors range from platinum silver to yellow gold, and I think that’s quite convenient if you ask me.

Regardless of what colors we are recommended or shown, this is truly up to the consumer! I have slowly been turning my wardrobe over to colors and styles that suit my complexion much better and will last in my closet year-round. With the various color palettes I’ve been testing out, most of them tend to bring my hair, eyes, and skin out more. I feel brighter, and I hope this bit of information will help you slowly make your way to feeling as light and bright as I do!
