THE POWER OF SIMPLICITY

What is it about the right French cuff shirt, jeans and a boot that feels so right? I like to think it’s the fact that anyone can wear it but not everyone can wear it well. There’s something about perfecting reductive dressing that is inherently powerful.

To look at the excess of the fashion world and opt for the most basic and paired back idea of it is in its own right punk. It feels like a muted form of protest toward what’s constantly being thrown at us. It’s what makes Chanel somewhat punk when worn by the right person, think Kristen Stewart. She’s wearing a tweed set, matronly and stuffy in theory, but with the disheveled sort of makeup and fuck-off attitude it becomes a rejection of the prissy and elite nature of the brand. Fran Lebowitz’s oversized and slouchy Saville Row blazers from Anderson & Sheppard are at once a sort of mockery of the price point and respect that normally comes along with owning a bespoke piece of suiting.

These are simple sartorial items that when shown in the right light become incredibly individual, unique and altogether independent. Next time you are thinking of a style overhaul, consider the power of well done staples. Don’t be afraid to play with a classic!
