Want to Try Onigirazu?

Want to try onigirazu? This is one of the few places to try it in New York City.

Well first off what is onigirazu you may ask? In simple terms it is basically a big onigiri rice ball turned sandwich, the perfect grab and go lunch in the East Village. Tokuyamatcha & Onigirazu Bar has a variety of fillings along with delicious matcha that makes it the perfect combo from this grab and go cafe. The owners are from Osaka, Japan and wanted to bring these sandos to New York City with their own spin! With over 20 different filling options, from spam musabi , salmon avocado to chicken karaage with garlic chili oil they are delicious, filling and easy to save for later.

My personal favorites are the spam musabi and the chicken karaage with garlic chili oil as the rice is seasoned to perfection while the garlic oil adds a big flavor punch to the chicken. The spam musabi is not life changing but it feels nostalgic to me as I grew up on spam, rice and eggs. Be aware the line here though for the lunch rush hour! It can get pretty long, so make sure you order 20 minutes ahead for an easy pick up. The sandwiches run about 9.75 each which isn’t the cheapest thing ever but definitely not the worst price for how big these rice balls are.
